Treatment with dental braces can help correct numerous problems with your teeth, but also raise questions regarding how to keep both teeth and braces clean. Brushing and flossing both remain important during your treatment, though your technique changes to accommodate your braces.
Oral Hygiene While Wearing Braces
Oral hygiene is always important to prevent cavities and gum disease, but it becomes particularly important while you are wearing dental braces. The irregular surfaces of braces collect bits of food, which can contribute to tooth decay. Food that collects in the mouth attracts bacteria, which produce acidic waste products that eat through the enamel. The buildup of bacteria in the mouth can also lead to gum disease, increasing the possibility of eventual tooth loss.

While you are wearing your braces, it’s very important to clean your teeth regularly. This includes brushing and flossing. Dr. Ghosh or Dr. Lofgren will provide special tools you can use to clean your teeth. Also be sure to ask about special considerations when you floss your teeth.
Tooth-Cleaning Techniques While Wearing Braces
While you are wearing your braces, you will have to adapt your oral hygiene routine to accommodate them. Use a soft brush to keep from damaging the wires. The orthodontist might also provide special brushes designed to remove food particles from your braces and from between your teeth. He might also recommend a mouthwash to dislodge additional food particles and to clean between and around the teeth.
When flossing, you will have to be careful to avoid dislodging the wires of your braces. Floss threaders are helpful, allowing you to thread the floss between your teeth under the wires. With careful flossing, you can then carefully remove food particles from between the teeth as well as massaging the gums to keep them healthy.
