Invisalign is a type of clear braces often chosen by adults who need orthodontic work. Because they are clear, many adults find they are less self-conscious about their treatment if they choose Invisalign. Invisalign can be used to treat a wide range of orthodontic issues, but in some cases traditional braces remain the best option.
Advantages of Invisalign
Clear braces are a popular option for adults, especially those who deal with the public during the course of their day and wish to feel confident about their appearance. If their specific orthodontic needs can be met using Invisalign, they often choose this option to maintain their self-confidence and still achieve their goals.
Because they are clear, many adults find they are less self-conscious about their treatment if they choose Invisalign.
Aside from the fact they are virtually invisible, these braces offer other advantages including:
- The smooth plastic trays do not irritate your lips, tongue, or gums
- Trays can be removed periodically
- Dietary restrictions are not as severe
If you need orthodontic treatment, your orthodontist can help you decide what treatment is the best option for you based on your specific issues and your long-term goals for your teeth.
How Invisalign Works
Invisalign utilizes a series of clear plastic trays that are custom made to fit your mouth. Each tray is slightly different so that your teeth are gradually shifted into the proper position. Your orthodontist uses digital imagery to determine how each tray is configured. The exact configuration of each individual tray is determined by the current position of your teeth, the eventual goal, and how far along you are in your treatment.
During your treatment, you’ll wear each tray for about two weeks before moving on to the next one. You’ll be able to see results within a few weeks, and since you can remove the trays for short periods of time, it will be easy for you to gauge the progress of your treatment as time passes.
