Straightening your teeth can give you a dramatic uptick in self-esteem, but during treatment you might be self-conscious about metal braces or other orthodontic appliances. If you want straight teeth without the discomfort and unattractive look of traditional braces, Invisalign might be the answer for you.
Advantages of Straight Teeth
Straight teeth are important for more than just aesthetic reasons. If your teeth are crooked, in can affect the alignment of your jaw. This can affect your bite, leading to a range of issues. These can include:
- Abnormal wear
- Clenching and grinding
- Misalignment of the jaw joint
These can all lead to long-term issues, including severe discomfort and even tooth loss. Having your teeth straightened with orthodontic treatment greatly reduces the risks of these developments.
How Invisalign Works
Where traditional braces use rubber bands and metal braces to move your teeth into proper position, with Invisalign your orthodontist fits you with custom made plastic trays. These trays are clear, so when you wear them they are virtually invisible. They’re also made from molds and digital photographs of your teeth, so they fit you exactly and gradually shift your teeth according to the way you want your smile to eventually look. You could go through your entire treatment without anyone ever realizing you’re seeing an orthodontist at all.
Each tray is worn for about two weeks, then traded for the next tray in the sequence. Within four to six weeks, you’ll start to see a difference in the way your teeth look. You can take the trays out of your mouth for short intervals, but you should wear them for at least twenty-two hours every day.
To keep your trays clean and avoid increasing the likelihood of decay, rinse them out after you eat or drink, and avoid drinking anything but water while you have the trays in. Remove the trays to drink hot beverages and avoid foods or beverages that can stain your trays.
