When most people think of orthodontic treatment, they think of dental braces. There are, however, other types of orthodontic treatment, all of which work to correct improper alignment and ensure teeth are in the correct position.
Types of Braces
The focus of orthodontic treatment is to ensure the teeth are all properly aligned. In addition to traditional metal dental braces, other types of braces are often used to correct misalignment. These include:
- Clear plastic braces
- Porcelain braces
- Lingual braces
- Aligner trays
Clear plastic and porcelain braces work the same as traditional metal braces. The only difference is the type of material the actual braces are made from. Clear plastic and porcelain braces are less visible during treatment, but are still affixed to the fronts of the teeth.
When most people think of orthodontic treatment, they think of dental braces.
Lingual braces are attached to the backs of the teeth so they are difficult to see during treatment. Some alignment problems cannot be addressed with lingual braces, but they are a popular choice for many adults who do not want their orthodontic treatment to be obvious.
Aligner trays made of clear plastic are another popular option. These clear trays, including Invisalign trays, move your teeth a small distance at a time, gradually shifting them into the proper place. These trays are virtually invisible, and are a popular choice for adults undergoing orthodontic treatment.
Other Types of Orthodontic Treatment
Other types of orthodontic treatment can reduce the need for braces or address other problems that affect tooth and jaw alignment. These treatments are often used during pre-adolescence, while the jaw is still growing and the permanent teeth have not yet arrived. Because they are used to correct problems before they develop, these treatments are often referred to as interceptive orthodontic treatment and can include:
- Widening the palate
- Maintaining space between baby teeth
- Monitoring and managing growth of the jaw and facial bones
- Removal of baby teeth to create additional room
Interceptive orthodontics helps reduce or even eliminate the need for extensive orthodontic treatment later in life.
