Invisalign is a way to move your teeth into the proper position without using traditional metal braces. Instead it uses clear plastic trays to gradually shift teeth into correct alignment. Trays must be worn during both daytime and nighttime hours for successful results.
What Is Invisalign?
If your teeth are out of alignment, you should consult with an orthodontist to determine the best type of treatment to correct your bite. Invisalign has become a popular alternative to traditional braces, especially in situations where the misalignment is relatively minor. This orthodontic treatment uses clear plastic trays to gradually shift the teeth from improper to proper alignment.
Each tray used in Invisalign treatment is slightly different from the previous tray. By the time you reach the last tray, your teeth are in the correct position. You then wear a retainer to keep them from shifting out of proper alignment. Your retainer might be the last tray from your treatment, or you might receive a new retainer.
Successful Invisalign Treatment
In order to insure your treatment is successful, you should closely follow the guidelines your orthodontist provides. These guidelines will tell you how and when to wear your trays, how to take care of them, and what precautions to take to ensure your teeth remain healthy during treatment. General guidelines include:
- Wear your trays at least 22 out of every 24 hours
- Clean trays after eating or drinking
- Avoid hot beverages while wearing your trays
- Wear your retainer as directed after treatment is complete
After your treatment, your teeth will be properly aligned, keeping you from developing long-term problems associated with misalignment. In the long run, misalignment can lead to severe wear and tear, headaches, aches in the ear and jaw, and misalignment of the jawbone. In addition, your teeth will no longer be crooked, and your smile will look better than ever.
